Research interests

Language variation and change, microcomparative syntax, tense, aspect, verb phrase structure, and the interface between lexicon, syntax and semantics.

Work in progress

GET – syntax, semantics and lexicon

In this project, I focus on the properties of the verb få ’get’ and build on my previous work on non-canonical passives. Få is interesting since it has both possessive, causative, perfective and modal readings, and since it in some ways patterns with modals, and in other ways rather behaves like a lexical verb.

Swedish in America

Joint project with Maia Andréasson (GU), Benjamin Lyngfelt (GU), Jenny Nilsson (SOFI), and Sofia Tingsell (GU).

Web page: https://sites.google.com/site/svenskaniamerika/home/english

The project Swedish in America investigates the Swedish language spoken in America today and to what extent today’s American Swedish differs from Standard Swedish, from Swedish dialects and from the American Swedish spoken in 50 years ago, when Folke Hedblom and Torsten Ordéus made a large number of recordings.

We made our first field trip to Minnesota in June 2011, and in June 2012 we made additional recordings in Illinois. (Both field trips were financed by Torsten Söderberg’s Foundation.) In ongoing work, we discuss e.g. koinéization, (incomplete) language acquisition, bilingualism and attrition.

There is also a project on Norwegian in America:

NALS – Nordic Atlas of Linguistic Structure Online

Together with a group of linguists in Oslo and Tromsø, I am currently involved in developing an atlas over syntactic variation in Scandinavia, Nordic Atlas of Linguistic Structure Online. The empirical basis for the atlas is data collected within the umbrella projcet Scandinavian Dialect Syntax (ScanDiaSyn). The data is available through two research infrastructures, the Nordic Dialect Corpus and the Nordic Syntax Database.

The Nordic Syntax Database and the Nordic Dialect Corpus are available here:
